Who was Thomas Griffin and what was so bizarre about his life and death?

Thomas Griffin was born in a coastal town in North West Ireland. At the time of his birth, his town was suffering from the Cholera outbreak and the population had shrunk to 12 thousand from 15 thousand.

At a very young age of 17, Thomas decided to embark on a journey after enrolling for the Irish constabulary and volunteered to work in the British army during the war against Crimea. He was rewarded with many medals for his services.

When he came home, he took advantage of an offer to travel to Australia free of charge in respect for his participation in the war. When he reached Australia he married a wealthy widow. However, their marriage didn’t last long as he used up all her wealth and then pretended to have died and continued to lead on an adventurous life.

Due to his experience, he was offered a job in the New South Wales police force. He was sent to Rockhampton where he eventually became the chief constable. He was then transferred to Melbourne where he…
