15-year-old Rebecca Aylward was murdered in Aberkenfig, South Wales, in 2010 for one of the most casually cruel and trivial reasons ever: a bet. More than the murder, the reason for it disturbed the community beyond reason.

Rebecca and Joshua started dating at the fledgling age of fourteen- both naive and foolish. They grew up in the Aberkenfig, South of Wales and their relationship reflected the immaturity of their age. They kept on breaking up and getting back together; it was often enough for Rebecca’s involved parents to be confused about the relationship status on the eve of her murder.

The relationship met an inevitable hiccup when rumors about Rebecca’s pregnancy started floating around in high school. She broke up with Joshua, and both started seeing other people. Meanwhile, Joshua often fantasized about and expressed his anger to friends by saying he wanted to poison Rebecca or push her into the river. Creepily but…
