University life is all about parties and having fun while studying. But, what if one stupid mistake of getting drunk makes you lose everything? Katie Sepich was a graduate learning business administration at New Mexico State University. She worked as a part-time waitress at El Sombrero Patio Cafe, a popular restaurant in Las Cruces, Mexico. While returning home from a party late at night, Katie encountered a monster in the guise of a helpful stranger. She couldn’t even fathom what this man would do to her.

Katie originally lived in Carlsbad, New Mexico, before moving to Las Cruces for her university. She was the eldest child of Dave Sepich and Jayann Sepich and had two other siblings, Caraline Sepich and A.J. Sepich. Her brother described Katie as:

“Katie was a lot to handle but also a lot to have behind you and on your side. She was always my protector but also my best friend.”

Being a 22-year old with a vibrant personality, she had many friends who adored her. However, she was the closest to her best friend Tracy and boyfriend of 8 months, Joe Bischoff. She lived in a rented home with Tracy on the upper story of a building, located on the east side of Las Cruces.

On Aug 30 2003, Katie decided to go to a party two blocks away from her house with Tracy and Joe. They went to the party with the hope of having the time of their life, but things turned sour when Katie saw Joe kissing another girl.

Feeling betrayed and enraged after the confrontation with Joe, she left the party in a hurry without informing anyone. She kept thinking to herself how the love of her life could do this to her. In the midst of all that…
