Many people believed that this book was based on a real event. Robinson Crusoe is a work of fiction, but it turns out that Alexander Selkirk’s amazing survival tale had a significant influence.
He was one of seven brothers and was born in Lower Largo, Scotland, in 1676. He had a tendency to act erratically. He was once called to a gathering with the town seniors for indecent conduct, according to a Lower Largo church record from 1693.
Selkirk set sail for the choppy North Sea, and it took him an entire 80 years to make it back to his hometown. Selkirk had only been home for five minutes when he was once more in trouble with the local parish, this time for the much less murkier offense of hitting his family.
